This page has been translated from Danish considering the descendants in USA.
The name is spelled in multiple ways:
Plattfus, Plathfuess, Platphus and more variations.
Seen in Danish as Platfod, Plattfoed, in Dutch as Platvoet, etc. So searching is not so easy.
If you have more information, then I will be glad to receive it at the e-adress above, where 'snabel-a' is to be replaced with - youknowwhat.
Deutschland:
Platfuss in Scandinavia comes from Westfalen in Deutschland (eng: Germany),
from the town Herford near Bielefeldt, just between Hannover and Dortmund.
Here is 1366 a Ludolf Platvoet,
and many flat feet are seen after that.

Nederland:
There is a larger and older family Platvoet in Nederland,
but any connection to the Platfuss in Herford and Scandinavia is unknown.
In Nederland a branch of the family had the coat of ams:
A cross of Andrew (X) with wavy edge
(dk: karvskåret, dvs med runde tætstående hak i kanten),
tinktures (colours) vary.

The first known Platfuss in Danmark is seen 1682,
where Engelbrecht Platfuss filed as a citizen in the town Fåborg at SW-Fyn (Fyn is the central island of Danmark).
His name was Engelbrecht, and several descendants got named after him,
so we have a least 7 men named Engelbrecht Platfuss to keep track of.
He declares to come from 'Herfurth',
which must be Herford.
A branch of the family took the maternal name Ursin. That is latin and means Bear (Bjørn is a wellknown name). Bears are rather flat-footed, so is that much better?
Thanks to Janne Tylvad for many church register records.
In an earlier version of this page, there was a branch on Bornholm (Danish island in the Baltic Sea). It has been coupled to the norwegian branch.
An Ingebrigt (Engelbrecht) Platfuss got Married in 1807 near Bergen (old city on the westcoast), and got a son Ingebrigt the same year. Then he disappeared, but came back 1814. He had served in the navy during the England-war 1807-14, and had been a prisoner in England. 1810 we see him as muster-clerk on Christiansø (very small island N of Bornholm in the Baltic Ocean, and an important navy stronghold), and he makes a daughter on a girl form Gudhjem (N-Bornholm). 1815 he is in the census of Bergen, but later he disappeared for good. A few of the descendants have used the name Platfuss, but on Bornholm the daughter was an Engelbrecht, and in Norge and later USA the surname was Ingebrigtsen.
This Ingebrigt (Engelbrecht) may well be identical to the merchant boy Engelbrecht Justsen Platfuss (1779-1801-) born in København, seen in census 1801 in Næstved (town 80 km SSW of København (eng: Copenhagen)) and in the pedigrre above. But we have no proof. It may be found in a naval muster (dk: sørulle) in an archive in Norge.
Thanks to Lisa Olsen and Brian Huseland - both in USA - for information, especially copies from the Ingebrigtsen family bible.
Ludolph Platfuss also came from Herford, he is almost same age as Engelbrecht the progenitor of the Danish branch. He became a merchant in Kristianstad in NE-Skåne (eng: Scania, the south part of Sverige (eng: Sweden)), 110 km ENE of København. He is buried there.
(At Geni.net the Swedes claim, that he came from Erfurt in E-Deutschland,
and died in Korsør in Danmark, but it is not so).

Ludolph was taken as a hostage by the Danish troops during the Great Nordic War (dk: Store Nordiske Krig (1700-21)).
Markus Gunshaga has found his tombstone:
The tombstone of Ludolph Platfuss is still to be seen in Kristianstad:
- it earlier lay in the church Heliga Trefaldighetskyrkan
- was later put on the facade of the church, but is now
- placed at the old churchyard at Skottenborg in Kristianstad with the number 26.
The rather well-kept inscription says:
”Åhr 1667 d. 20 Julii uthi Herford i Westphalen född”
and that he
”sedan 1710 d. 30(?) Februarij, med 7 andra…medborgare af staden bortfördes till Helsingiör och dher d 9 Aprilis igenom döden bortryckt”.
Translation:
Year 1667 on July 20'th in Herford in Westfalen born ...
later 1710 on February 30(?) with 7 other ... citizens of the town abducted to Helsingør (40 km N of København) and there at April 9'th by the death pulled away.
Thanks to Markus!
A John Platfuss (ca 1815-1886) took part in the USA Civil War 1861-64.
He declared to be Danish. He got a daughter Caroline, and they are the only Platfuss I have found in the USA.

John is not identical to Jørgen Wilhelm Ursin (Platfuss) (1815-1871), he was the bookbinder for the reoyal court in København.
